It's official! Crossing over Ireland, Fossett broke the absolute distance record for flight by any kind of aurcraft. He's approaching his landing at Kent airport at this moment. Congratulations to Steve Fossett and the team!

I've always been interested in what goes on beyond the Earth -- the planets around us, and our ever-expanding efforts to get to know them. I've been writing about such things for a long time, in newspapers (the Boston Globe for 20 years), magazines (New Scientist, Wired, Atlantic, Smithsonian, Astronomy, Sky & Telescope), and books (Life on Mars, 1979). Now I'm writing this blog, too.
